Position Summary:
Manages the medical and safety aspects for the members, member guests and employees of Wasatch Peaks Ranch in a constantly changing mountain environment. This includes but is not limited to, avalanche mitigation, hands-on patient care, transportation, intensive customer service and interdepartmental cooperation. This position will require working outside in a variety of weather conditions and a high level of fitness is required.
Job Description and Focus:
- Administer first aid and transportation in the event of a medical emergency
- Safe operation of snowmobiles for operational and patient transport needs
- Perform all aspects of lift evacuation including tower climbing, ground belay, line riding, and any other unique evacuation scenarios
- Perform technical rope rescue using a variety of technical equipment including high angle rescue and sled belay
- Ability to operate as a mountain dispatcher
- Ability to operate as a “central” dispatcher during avalanche risk reduction work
- Document incident forms, snow safety efforts and accident investigations
- Provide industry-leading customer service to members and member guests including information, evacuation from difficult situations, find lost equipment and safety education
- Knowledge and understanding of mountain weather and forecasting, interpretation of computer weather models
- Assist snow safety team with snow stability evaluations and terrain recommendations
- Perform avalanche risk reduction work as directed by the snow safety team
- Demonstrate proficiency in all facets of avalanche rescue including in-bounds and out-of-bounds rescues
- Maintain rope lines, signage, pads, fencing and identify and mark mountain hazards
- Perform closing procedures to ensure the mountain is clear daily
- Perform maintenance and repairs on equipment as necessary
- Strong communication and guest relations skills
- Strong leadership and decision-making skills
- The ability to work well with others

License or Safety Requirements:
- Valid Driver’s License
- The ability to obtain an ATF explosives handler permit
- A current CPR and medical certification at the EMT, OEC, or WFR level (must certify at OEC level or higher by start of season)
- You must possess one of the medical certifications listed to be considered for this position.
Physical Requirements (must have the ability to):
- Safely ski all terrain at an expert level
- If you snowboard, you will need to also be an expert skier to be considered
- The ability to hike and ski in steep exposed terrain in arduous conditions with packs weighing up to 60 pounds
- Read and write (English).
- Communicate verbally and effectively with necessary parties with or without two-way radios.
- Give and/or follow verbal and written instructions.
- Understand ski resort operations
- Supervise subordinates.
- Visually inspect all work areas.
- Operate equipment for several hours at a time.
- Perform basic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
- Retrieve, read and interpret information from technical sources.
- Stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, twist, turn, bend and kneel for extended lengths of time.
- Lift up to 75 lbs occasionally, 50 lbs frequently, and 10 lbs constantly.
Priority hiring will be given to individuals with route-leading experience, avalauncher gunning, and previous patrol experience. An on-snow hiring clinic is planned for late March-early April for qualified applicants.
REMINDER - you must be certified EMT or OEC and be an expert skier to be considered.
Seasonal full-time staff are immediately eligible for WPR benefits (a benefit guide will be shared after the initial interview and reference check). The expected season is November 2023 - April 2024.
A background check will be required prior to any start date.
