Pediatric Urologic Surgery Nurse Practitioner I/II (NURSE PRACT 1/2)

Job Summary


To provide independent advanced level nurse practitioner clinical expertise to patients and their families on an on-going basis. This includes the management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and specialty protocols (e.g. chemotherapy) as defined by standardized procedures or independently based on licensure. This may include non-invasive or invasive procedures, surgical procedures, including operative first assist per approved standardized procedures as identified by the list available on the Medical Staff Office. Patient management decisions are independent where appropriate after assessment of the patient and interdependent with consultation with an attending or other member of the team. NPs are expected to act as an expert resource person for SOM_SON care providers including nurses, residents and other ancillary staff.

Provides patient care in a team based care environment to a diversified patient population. Applies knowledge, experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills. Demonstrates accountability for own practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act. #CA-AP

Minimum Qualifications

*Applicants will be hired at NPI (new grad) or NPII depending on qualifications and experience.*

NPI/II:
  • One year or greater pediatric experience as an RN.
  • Valid California Registered Nurse License without restriction
  • California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing License
  • California Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) without restriction
  • Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Certificate within 3 months of hire
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR
  • National NP board certification in aligned specialty with the practice area
  • Graduation with a master's degree, DNP or PhD in Nursing from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Ability to cope with personal stress experienced by team members, other professionals, and caretakers
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Judgement skills to effectively meet the needs of patients
  • Self-direction and organizational skills to function in an independent role
  • Ability to meet minimum standards for hospital credentialing and billing standards as a billable provider
  • Ability to cope with personal stress experienced by team members, other professionals, and caretakers

Department Overview

The Department of Urologic Surgery in the School of Medicine provides state-of-the-art clinical care services, educates medical students, residents, clinical and postdoctoral fellows in urology, and conducts basic science and clinical research, including clinical trials. Our clinic offers comprehensive diagnostic and treatment options for a wide range of adult and pediatric urological conditions, such as urinary incontinence, prostate and kidney cancers, kidney stones, male infertility, pediatric urology and kidney dysfunction. Every member of our team is a respected leader in their field of expertise, combining excellent credentials and experience with superb clinical skills and the ability to apply minimally invasive and robotic techniques where appropriate. The clinic also serves as a referral center for urologic patients in northern California.

Department Specific Job Scope

Under the direct supervision of the Urologic Surgery Attending, the Pediatric Urologic Surgery Nurse Practitioner provides independent advanced level nurse practitioner clinical expertise to pediatric urologic patients and their families in the ambulatory and inpatient settings and acts as a healthcare resource for other health care providers including nurses, residents and other ancillary staff.

This position includes performing urologic procedures such as urodynamics and cystoscopy. Additional duties include:
-Involve with dressing application and change, removal of drains, suture and staple removal, intermittent catheterization teaching, and wound care.
-Coordinate patient care between other services including pediatric nephrology, pediatric surgery, pediatric endocrinology and other pediatric services.
-Collaborates with colleagues to optimize patient management and reduce waste.
-Provides clinical consultation and coordinate education programs with support from peer providers.
-Acts as a resource person providing staff education regarding special needs and/or procedures
-Maintains and expands appropriate knowledge base through self-directed educational and professional activities.
